Vitreous Surgery

Vitreous Surgery, also known as Vitrectomy, is a delicate microsurgical procedure performed to treat diseases affecting the vitreous humor (the clear, gel-like substance that fills the inside of the eye) and the retina (the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye).

During the procedure, the vitreous gel is carefully removed and replaced with a specialized fluid, gas, or silicone oil to restore the eye’s normal structure and improve vision.

Symptoms that May Require Vitreous Surgery

If you experience any of the following symptoms, it may indicate a problem within the vitreous or retina:

  • Sudden or progressive loss of vision
  • Appearance of floaters or flashes of light
  • Distorted or blurred vision
  • Shadow or curtain-like effect over part of your vision
  • Bleeding inside the eye (vitreous hemorrhage)
  • Distorted straight lines or objects appearing bent
  • Sudden onset of black spots or dark areas in vision
Causes / Conditions That May Require Surgery

Vitreous surgery is recommended for several retinal and vitreous disorders, including:

  • Retinal Detachment
  • Diabetic Retinopathy and Vitreous Hemorrhage
  • Macular Hole or Epiretinal Membrane
  • Vitreomacular Traction Syndrome
  • Intraocular Infections (Endophthalmitis)
